The region around Bamberg is considered the area with the highest brewery density in the world. In hardly any other city in the world the brewing tradition, developed over centuries, has survived as vividly as in the Upper Franconian cathedral city.

Just as the Regnitz flows through the historical center, so the trail of the brewing industry runs like a red thread through the city. Since the founding of Bamberg, the production of beer has ensured the livelihood of many artisans and farmers: bourgeois brewmasters produced the beer, butchers produced the barrels, coppersmiths produced the brewing kettles, and vine-growers and farmers produced the natural raw materials.

Today Bamberg has not necessarily the most modern and certainly not the largest breweries. The local companies are small-scale ones and often still work with manual methods that have been handed down for generations and have proven themselves over the centuries.

Dr. Christian Fiedler, author of “Bamberg, die wahre Hauptstadt des Bieres” (Bamberg, the true capital of beer), gives insights into the history of current and former Bamberg breweries, whose existence can only be guessed today through a closer look.
