The Regnitz flows right through Bamberg. Without it, Bamberg would probably never have existed, as rivers have always played since antiquity an important role on the position of human settlements in many ways.

Not only they served as sources of food and energy, but as a natural wastewater they also prevented possible diseases. As transport routes they allowed access to trade as well as the imposition of duties and protected the inhabitants as a natural barrier against possible attacks.

Although the functions of the rivers changed over time, they never completely lost their meaning. In Bamberg, all these uses can still be understood today. For this reason, many Bambergers still speak today of the lifeline of the Regnitz.
